Why Used Wärtsilä Parts Deserve a Closer Look Than Most
The Wärtsilä 20, 32 and 46 families power everything from deep-sea bulkers to offshore support vessels, and they stay in service for 25 years or more. That longevity cuts both ways: genuine parts are available second-hand at a fraction of factory price, but many have already lived through two overhaul cycles. Buying well is a matter of knowing where each series actually wears.
Series-Specific Weak Points
Wärtsilä 32 (6L32, 8L32, W6L32, 18V32)
The 32 is a workhorse auxiliary and propulsion engine. On high-hour units pulled at Alang, we most often reject parts for:
- Big-end bearing fretting on connecting rods, usually downstream of fuel dilution or extended lube-oil intervals.
- Exhaust valve seat corrosion on HFO-burning units — check seat width and look for wash-out channels before accepting any cylinder head.
- Crankshaft fillet cracking near the oil bores. Every Wärtsilä 18V32 crankshaft and 8L20 crankshaft we dispatch has passed MPI on all fillets; insist on the same from any supplier.
Wärtsilä 20 (6L20, 8L20)
Compact auxiliary engines where the usual rejections are liner bore polishing from chronic low-load running and camshaft lobe wear. A 20-series liner with a mirror bore and no visible honing marks is already past useful life, however cheap it looks.
Inspection Checklist for Used Wärtsilä Components

Ask for the donor engine model and running hours, the MPI/UT reports with the technician's name on them, and dimensional readings — not adjectives. A supplier who can show you a dial-gauge sheet for a Wärtsilä 6R22HF crankshaft is a supplier you can trust with an 8R22. Full procedure here: how our engineers verify a used crankshaft before purchase.
Where Our Wärtsilä Stock Concentrates
We carry rotating stock for the W6L32 family — including cylinder heads and cylinder liners — plus 20-series crankshafts such as the Wärtsilä 8R22 crankshaft. Anything not on the shelf is usually traceable within days through our Wärtsilä brand desk. Send the part number and engine model through our contact page and expect a dimensioned answer, not a brochure.
